Nearly all corals use calcium in their anatomy, forming the complex calcareous structures commonly known as coral reefs. As coral grows calcium is taken out of the sea water and in an aquarium situation the calcium must be replaced to maintain the natural balance of healthy aquarium life.
Most corals use alkalinity to form their structure which is made up primarily of calcium carbonate. Corals convert alkalinity (bicarbonates) into carbonates
which forms the coral reef structure.
As all coral reefs require calcium and alkalinity, they also require the element magnesium. This element is needed to moderate the reef building process and must be replenished regularly to ensure healthy reef growth and sustainability.
Most coral reefs and their inhabitants including marine algae require a complex range of trace elements. These trace elements act as catalysts in certain reactions, enhance and maintain complex bodily functions to ensure healthy reef systems.
